How far would you go to find THE ONE?
One simple mouth swab is all it takes.
One tiny DNA test to find your perfect partner – the one you’re genetically made for.A decade after scientists discover everyone has a gene they share with just one person, millions have taken the test, desperate to find true love.
Now, five more people take the test. But even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking – and deadlier – than others…
A psychological thriller with a difference, this is a truly unique novel which is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I love coming across books on the web that make me interested. I don’t buy every book that pulls my eye. In fact, I am quite critical of anything new and reading the blurb often either makes or breaks the deal for me. Without shame I’ll say that The One was one of those books that was neither here nor there. I liked the blurb, but it didn’t convince me to get and read it immediately. However, something must have been intriguing enough because the book stayed in my head for a few days and remembering that I had promised myself to read more thrillers this year I decided to take a chance. The One was sitting on my Kindle. I was happy to leave it there until the ‘right day’ came… but then, Inge reviewed the book and her thoughts on the book got me excited. [You can find Inge’s review for The One here]. A couple of days later I set aside a fantasy title I was currently half way through and got stuck in The One.
Guys…. I loved it! This book delivers ‘edge of the seat‘ in spades! The rapidfire chapters dealt out stfu moments every single time. And The One has 103 chapters.
Yeah!
Imagine being knocked sideways for 103 chapters, one after another. Whooaaaaa! There wasn’t a single faltering moment in progression of the story as I read this book- it was 100% pace, 100% engagement and 100% “holy shit!”
I admit, as I ever dabble in thrillers once-twice-three times a year max, it might just be that the freshness the genre delivered to my reading variety is just that: fresh! However, I can’t fault the quality of the twists, the solidity of plot(s)/characters and their motivations and the freaking fireworks-worthy revelations… Ah, I wish I could tell you more… I feel like gushing about my favorite parts about the book, but the Spoiler Police will make me walk the Green Line if I spill any beans. The blurb is all you’ll need… Think dating, DNA, people scrambling to find the love of their life… oh, all sorts is going to hit the fan!
The writing is really neat and flowy (even though not completely perfect due to some typos/errors with words, of which there were definitely less than 6!) and as my pessimistic side started to expect some fresh hell to happen as the chapter-counter was going up, somehow Marrs still managed to make me believe that things were going to be A-OK. In a way I feel Marrs managed to play with my mind: instil a sense of constant foreboding through non-stop twists, while at the same time offering little moments of respite…really small, short moments of respite.. because… BOOM! … another unexpected curveball! And that? That is what I love about reading the most.
A bit about the characters, because honestly, the less you know about the story the better your reading enjoyment will be. The cast is rather wide and colorful. We have the male and female POVs, we have the terminally ill, the psychos, the business people, the regular people. OK.. there’s 5 main POVs, I didn’t mean to scare you with all the plurals, but The most intriguing part? Some Most of the craziness you just cannot see coming. (And if you can? Maybe you should write a book too because obvs you have the material for it in your head) There are beautiful moments in The One, there are sad moments and downright horrible moments… all in all- a beautiful fictional mirror image of life itself! 5 stars- The One deserves all the hype!
Thriller/mystery/crime/suspense bookjunkies should definitely read this! I would also recommend everyone else to pick this book up. It will excite, horrify and entertain you.
ooooo this was one sounds good with that blurb alone but then your review was like YES YES YES!!!

Blimey* you’re fast! Just yesterday you were saying how much you were enjoying the story and you already have a review up. You must really like this book 😉 After reading this magnificent review, I foresee a shuffling in my TBR.
*Probably in my Top 5 favorite words of all time but I don’t use it enough. When I saw it in your tweet yesterday, I realized that I could (maybe) nonchalantly insert it into a conversation like you did 🙂 Blimey is up there with discombobulated and gobsmacked – I can’t think of the other two, so maybe it just moved up to Top 3!

ha, yes, spent Friday afternoon finishing it, couldn’t put it down really! I think you’ll enjoy this book as well, there’s so many twists to keep you going. By the end you’ll start to expect them, and even maybe predict some but still very entertaining… and well, creepy and horrible and all at the same time!
Blimey is such a good word! It stuck on me because my boss uses it and I ‘hear’ myself use it too often 😂 discombobulated? now that’s a mouthful!
thanks, hope you enjoyed your weekend and that Monday won’t be blue 😉

‘ 100% pace, 100% engagement and 100% “holy shit!”’ The book is waiting for me on my Kindle and now I want to drop everything and see for myself, haha! When I read the blurb there was something that just stayed with me, I’m intrigued and I can’t pinpoint the exact reason why, but I love the fresh idea and I have higher hopes than ever for this story now! Fantastic review!

*Punches the air* Hell yeah! I was crossing my fingers that you’d like it but didn’t expect you to be on the exact same level of excitement as me! Thanks so much for the mention too and that my review convinced you to read it, that’s giving me so much pleasure! What I can’t understand is why it took this long – he had quite a few rejection letters it seemed – before a publisher saw a bright future in this novel. That’s just crazy. This novel has so many twists, I think it’ll be on my fav list for 2017.

hahaha, man, that was a fantastic read! I didn’t think it was going to be so good and I loved Tim’s storyline!
I can’t understand either why any publisher would reject the book- it’s as solid as they come!
ha, I actually shelved the book on my favs shelf on Goodreads!
I gotta read more books that you enjoy and give glowing review to… I don’t want to miss out on the goodies! 😂

Tim’s the one from the couple right? Yeah that was cool but not so surprising either (in hindsight) if you know the author ;-). Always at your disposal with book recommendations. If you want to read one that I loved too (you asked for it lady) then I also highly recommend My Girl by Jack Jordan. Just saying… ;-).

Ah yes that Tim, my memory was already failing me ;-), yep what a guy! So would you still take the test? Before and after your reading? It’s crazy to admit this but I still have a curiosity, even after all this.

Hmm.. that’s a good question… I think if I was already in a relationship and truly happy, I wouldn’t. If I was single, I probably would as wlel… then again… don’t get me wrong, I love my husband, but if I had to start over? I’d stay single 😀 So much easier! 😀

Wow! 103 freaking chapters. And you say every single one adds a new plot twist. This sounds like the perfect thriller for any fan. Honestly, the blurb sounds freaky as hell too. I can already imagine how wrong things can turn out when you put genes and soulmates together. Excellent spoiler-free review! I guess a thriller or 3 per year does keep the genre pretty exciting and less “been there, done that”.

Thanks Lashaan!
Ha, yes, the chapters are short but so ‘full’ of stuff and truly- it’s a good trick to keep the suspense up… in some cases i can see how short chapters can annoy the reader but in this thriller it worked and benefitted the story.

I love your philosophy of picking up a new book. There are so many books in the world; we need to be intentional about picking what we read next, for sure.
This book certainly has hooked me with the blurb– but I love the idea of 103 short chapters! I really like short chapters as a reader, because it inspires me to read “just one more…” I must get this book, apparently. 😀 Great review, as always Liis!
